Basics

Name: Polaris
Also known as: The Hero of Fate, Po, Larry (occasionally)
Age: Physically 20.  Mentally much, much older.
Height: 5'9"
Canon: OC

Once a reincarnating hero fated to save the world in every lifetime, Polaris fell to darkness after accidentally absorbing the memories of his 98 previous incarnations. Given a chance at redemption and an opportunity to set aside his fate, he is now trying to figure out who he wants to be and what he wants to do with his life.

Appearance: Average height for a human male (about 5'9"), with a lean but muscled build. He has shorty, curly white hair that is faintly luminous in starlight, and blue eyes that look too old for his face. Typically wears a tabard over a white shirt, trousers, and well-worn adventuring boots. His tabards tend to be various shades of blues.  Will sometimes wear a cloak, typically dark blue or dark gray.

Personality: Left to his own devices, Polaris tends to be quiet and thoughtful, with a melancholy air and a tendency to be kind and deferential to others. He can often get lost in his own thoughts. But he can be pretty harsh on himself if he feels he's made a mistake or wronged someone, and can easily slip into old patterns of neurotic people-pleasing. He often struggles to articulate what he wants, especially if he thinks that it might be an inconvenience to others. When a situation pokes at an old mental scar or sore spot, he tends to become anxious and high-strung.

On the other hand, there are moments when the full weight of his experiences comes through, and he seems to speak with the wisdom and insight of someone much older than he is.

Despite having put aside the hero's mantle, he does genuinely enjoy physical challenges and other elements of the adventuring life--as long as the stakes aren't too high. And while he tries to avoid high-pressure situations, if there is a serious immediate problem and he's in a position to help, he will do so.

History: Polaris is from Moira--a world ruled by Fate, where everything happens based on the expectations of certain types of stories. In particular, Polaris is a reincarnating hero whose Fate is to save the world in every lifetime by defeating his nemesis, Ophiuchus the Great Snake. He is considered to be that world's greatest hero, particularly blessed by the Weaver, the god who weaves the Pattern of all things on a vast metaphysical Loom.

In this lifetime (his 99th), he grew up in the farming town of Apple Hollow, and was raised mostly by his Nana. Notably, he had the gift of perfect memory. As Polaris is always marked from birth, he grew up under enormous pressure and scrutiny from his neighbors, and was expected to be a paragon of selfless heroism and inspiration at all times. Within this pressure-cooker of an upbringing, his naturally kind personality warped and he grew up to be something of a neurotic people-pleaser who could never say no to a request, and whose entire self-image was wrapped up in how helpful he could be to others. The only person who understood the real him was his best friend, Clem.

When the signs of Ophiuchus's return began to appear, Polaris left his home to face his destiny. Under the guidance of the Oracles of his world, he traveled the world to fight the Great Snake's minions and gain the power to face Ophiuchus himself. Polaris's sole companion through all of this was his animal companion, a talking star falcon named Greywind--who became Polaris's second true friend, and who saw the gentle and anxious person underneath the heroic mask.

The quest went abruptly and terribly awry very close to its end. Polaris's final stop was a holy shrine, a magical pool of water where he would unlock powers from his previous incarnations. But his gift of perfect memory interacted unexpectedly with the shrine's power, and instead he absorbed all memories of his past lifetimes, all at once. The shock shattered his mind as he was overwhelmed with the weight of all that he had sacrificed, all the losses he'd endured, all the times his loved ones or his hometown were destroyed because of his destiny.

Consumed by rage and grief, Polaris dedicated himself to destroying the Loom of Fate so that he wouldn't have to keep going through this--even when he learned that destroying the Loom would plunge the world into a cataclysm.

But he was stopped before he could achieve his goal, thanks to a group of heroes that the Weaver summoned to save the world. These heroes offered him a second chance, an opportunity to stop being the Hero of Fate and choose his own path without having to destroy the Loom to do so. Realizing that his actions were harming the loved ones he'd sworn to protect, and wouldn't actually give him what he wanted (because he never really knew what he wanted), Polaris stood down. And the Weaver, for their part, agreed to loosen the Pattern of Fate to be less rigid and to allow more freedom and chaos into the world.

Now he is on the long road of recovery and redemption, trying to figure out who he wants to be and mentally sorting through & processing the memories of 98 additional lifetimes. He's returned to Apple Hollow and, for now, is simply happy to not be the hero carrying the world on his back anymore.

Abilities: Over the course of his quest, Polaris has become an accomplished (and somewhat overpowered) adventurer, and is extremely skilled at combat using a sword and shield, as well as a bow and arrows. He wields the divine sword Coda, and is very good at taking down monsters and exploring dungeons. He can summon magical bombs, and has an impressive stash of gear that can grant him certain buffs and protections. He's also pretty robust, and can take a lot of damage before going down.

In addition, he is slowly learning to unlock the skills of his previous lifetimes--though some require more effort to 'tap into' than others. By reaching into his memories, he can temporarily gain the unique skill of a previous Polaris, though he can only use one at a time, and it can be physically & mentally taxing.

His animal companion, Greywind, also supports him in battle by being able to identify monster weak points.
